Maarten Baas

"Don't believe oneliners." Maarten Baas Dutch designer Maarten Baas ( 02/19/1978 ) was born in Arnsberg , Germany and moved to the Netherlands in 1979 , where he grew up . Upon graduating from high school in 1995 he began his studies at the prestigious Design Academy in Eindhoven. Baas designed the Knuckle Candlestick, which was taken into production by Potten Pols" while he was still studying. In 2000 he studied for several months at the Politecnico di Milano, Milan. In June 2002 he graduated from the Eindhoven Design Academy with two concepts. One of these is the already famous and generally known Smoke Series, for which Baas charred furniture and treated the burned skeletons with a coating, turning them into usable pieces of new furniture. Three of these smoke pieces became part of the Marcel Wanders Moooi international label design collection, which launched them during the Salone del Mobile in 2003, where they were greeted with applause. This feeling was followed by a solo show at Moss's gallery in New York a year later, when the Smoke Series expanded on 20th-century design classics, including works by Rietveld, Eames, Gaudí and Sottsass. Soon the Smoke collection was regarded by museums, critics, collectors and the design public as an iconic collection of modern design and Smoke has been held in several permanent collections in major museums around the world (amongst others the Victoria & Albert Museum , Groninger Museum , Montreal Museum of Fine Arts ) . In 2005 he started a collaboration with Baas Bas den Herder, which is now responsible for the production and development of almost all Maarten Baas designs. The founding of the Baas Studio and den Herder has allowed Maarten to work further with unique handcrafted pieces and produce on a larger scale. This new collaboration also allows Baas to take on even the most ambitious projects for hotels, restaurants, galleries, museums and private curators around the world. www.maartenbaas.com Photography by www.sarahjane.nl
